SURINAME. Nieuwe Kaart van Suriname vertonende de stromen en land-streken van Suriname, Comowini, cottica, en Marawini, gelegen in Zuid America op de kusten van Caribana. 6. gr. benoorden de Linie Equinoct. Copperplate. Amsterdam, J. Ottens 1718. Original old coloured map. Ca 40 x 51 cm. ¶ Centrefold split repaired. Beautiful map in fine codition.- Deze kaart, die ongeveer tussen 1713 en 1718 werd uitgegeven door de Amsterdamse kaartverkoper Josua Ottens, is waarschijnlijk gebaseerd op een kaart van Willem Mogge (1671/77, de oudstbekende gedrukte kaart van Suriname) en een handschriftkaart van de Labadisten (een religieuze secte). De kaart bevat vele topografische incorrectheden, waarschijnlijk dat de maker getracht heeft zoveel mogelijk informatie op de kaart aan te geven. Maar levert ze juist daarom een enorme schat aan gegevens op. Tussen de namen van rivieren en plantage-eigenaren staan ook nog allerlei wetenswaardigheden vermeld staan over het landschap en de bewoners. De kaart geeft bovendien een duidelijk beeld van het verdedigingsstelsel van de kolonie, zowel vanaf de zee als tegen de Marrons. Bron: UBA. [Ordernr.: 22571 ]
